I’ve put together a list of the things that I would like to accomplish in the next couple years of my life. Now it’s time to look at what accomplishing this list will cost me.
- Create a website - Fees for hosting a website for a year and books to learn how to do design – about $100.
- Get my motorcycle license - The Bay Area Motorcycle Training company charges $250 and takes about 3 days to get. Once completed, I write the DMV test and get my motorcycle license.
- Learn to play the guitar - One lesson per week for 6 months is about $660 with Jay
- Learn a second language I will actually use - A beginner course for 8 weeks at Casa Hispana runs about $380
- Travel extensively - This one is gonna get expensive, mostly ’cause I’ll have to bring the missus along which will double the airfare. An initial search into an around the world plane ticket puts in at around $10,000 plus hotel and food so probably another $5,000
- Running of the Bulls - First I have to get to Pamplona, then food and lodging, then hospital bills. Let’s guesstimate at around $2,000
- Ride in a helicopter - There is a tour company that does helicopter tours around the city for $85. It’s not a long ride but it’s a ride.
- Spend time north of the Arctic Circle - Not sure about this one. Let’s say around $1,200.
- Learn how to shoot guns - Shooting range is about $20/hour. Couldn’t find any gun safety classes or lessons. Team America, F@ck Yeah!
- Surf - Wet suit, about $150. Surf board, about $300.
- Lose weight - My gym membership is paid through to the end of April 2009 and cost me $200.
- Take singing lessons - Six lessons would run me about $450 though I have a friend who could probably help me out for a lot less.
- Finish reading Ulysses by James Joyce - Cost is nothing except my patience.
- Do the splits – I think that yoga is the key here and it will also help with the “Lose weight” goal. Mostly, I can do this on my own but I will need to take the odd class, let’s say 6 at about $15 a pop for a total of $90.
- Change the oil in a car - All I need is a trusting friend with a car, a drip pan to catch the oil, new oil to put in the car, and a free how-to video from youtube; about $20.
When all is said and done, the List, as it stands now, will cost me around $21,005. Hmm, time to find a higher paying job.

More indepth thought that reminds me of the Mastercard commercials…Can we really put a price on the adventures in life that we want to accomplish?? It’s amazing the more money we make doesn’t seem to make much difference. We learn to live with what we have and the more most of us make just means us buying ‘things’ we don’t nec. need. Any thoughts on the materialistic society we tend to live in?? I say go for your goals the money will come from somewhere if you really want to make it happen.
